Devon Tourism Awards 2016

In 2015, Hele Valley Holiday Park was nominated and ultimately took away the Bronze award in the Holiday Park & Holiday Village of the year category at the Devon Tourism Awards. Earlier this year we were amazed to hear that we were shortlisted for the third year in a row, this time not just for one award, but two!

The nominations were in both the Camping & Caravanning Park of the Year category, as well as the Holiday Park & Village of the Year category.

We were invited along with Devon’s top businesses to attend the 7th annual Devon Tourism Awards held on Thursday 10th November in the Great Hall of the University of Exeter. Hosted by Judi Spiers and with special guest Jo Pavey, throughout the evening the awards were presented to winners in categories as diverse as Spa & Wellbeing, Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs and Attractions.

Ilfracombe was noticeably put on the map with several outstanding local businesses showing their hard work and playing a big part in contributing to Devon’s tourism. Congratulations to other fellow-Ilfracombe award winning businesses such as Hele Bay’s Beach Cove, Ilfracombe Sea Safari, Nelly May’s Parlour and also a highly commended close neighbour of ours – Hele Corn Mill.

After a nail-biting evening and the awards had finally been announced, we are thrilled to reveal that Hele Valley Holiday Park is the proud owner of two Silver Awards!

We are now officially Devon’s Silver Camping & Caravanning Park of the Year along with being Devon’s Silver Holiday Park & Village of the Year.

Chairman of the Awards Panel, David Fursdon, says: “I know how important the tourist industry is to Devon. The wonderful reputation that this very special County enjoys in this area depends on maintaining the highest standards and this year's winners across a wide range of categories illustrate just that and personify one word; "Excellence".”

Awards organiser Robin Barker was delighted by this year’s awards: “This year’s winners exemplify so much of what is great about Devon. Innovation, outstanding service and superb experiences. Many congratulations to everyone involved.”

8 interesting facts about North Devon and the surrounding area!

North Devon is most well-known for the miles of glorious sandy beaches, elegant countryside views and laid back fishing villages. The easy going pace makes for the ideal holiday atmosphere.

It just goes to show that North Devon is understandably one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations. But some things are a little less obvious. Take a look at these 8 interesting facts about North Devon and the surrounding area…

1. St Nicholas’ Chapel

At the peak of Lantern Hill in Ilfracombe is St Nicholas’ Chapel, allegedly the UK’s oldest working lighthouse, built in 1361! The building and its beacon have stood for over 650 years!

2. Tidal Range

The Bristol Channel separates South Wales from North Devon. It is placed second on the planet for the title of highest and lowest tides (second only to the Bay of Fundy in Canada), meaning that North Devon’s tidal range is among the largest! Records show that the biggest range is an enormous 45ft!

3. Westward Ho!

Westward Ho! is the only place in the country (and one of only two in the world) that uses an exclamation mark in its name. It is also the only town in the UK named after a novel. Charles Kingsley, best known now for The Water Babies, published the novel Westward Ho! in 1855.

4. Braunton Burrows

Braunton Burrows is the largest sand dune system in Britain and has an amazing range of plants (over 400 species recorded!) and wildlife. Its unique biodiversity recognises it as both a National Nature Reserve and as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, giving it a world-class status!

5. Exmoor

Exmoor National Park is a unique landscape of moorland, woodland, valleys and farmland. As well as some breath-taking scenery, Exmoor has the largest concentration of Red Deer in England and the highest coastal cliffs in England. Great Hangman Cliff near Combe Martin Bay is 800ft/244m high!

6. The Devon ‘Witches’

The Devon 'Witches' were the last witches to be hung as punishment in Great Britain. Three women from Bideford had allegedly used witchcraft and were executed in Exeter in 1682!

7. Christian the Lion

Christian the lion, famous from the story ‘A Lion Called Christian’, was born in Ilfracombe Zoo on 12th August 1969 and was shortly afterwards purchased by Australian John Rendall and Ace Bourke from the Harrods store of London. Eventually, Christian was reintroduced to the wild in Africa. A year later his previous owners decided to go looking for him to see whether Christian would remember them. He did, along with two lionesses who accepted them both as well.

8. Combe Martin

The Guinness world record for the world's longest street party is held by the North Devon town of Combe Martin. This was celebrating the Queen's Jubilee in 2002 and the party stretched almost 2 miles through Combe Martin’s famously long High Street. The party had between 5000 and 8000 visitors, 700 tables with bands and bouncy castles.

Top ten things to do in the North Devon winter

It’s still winter here in Devon and while it may be cold for another few months, it certainly doesn't mean you’ll be stuck for things to do. North Devon takes on a completely different but equally as stunning character throughout the winter season. There is a whole beautiful county to explore, just be sure to wrap up warm and you’ll see for yourself the spectacular landscapes and countryside coastal views that the winter season can produce.

Today marks the day that the gates to our caravans and lodges close until Easter. Fortunately, our cottages are open all year round which are perfect for cosy family time as well as some brave adventures in the fresh sea breeze.

On top of that we've even gone to the effort of listing out the best things to do in North Devon throughout the frosty season.

1. North Devon is famous for it's beaches in the summer, but they can be even better in the winter. Go to one of the amazing local beaches in the refreshing winter to blow away the cobwebs. You may even have the whole beach to yourself.

2. Enjoy the country walks - Watersmeet on Exmoor.

3. Cosy country pubs. Tuck in to a hearty roast dinner on a lazy Sunday.

4. Family time. Sometimes you need to take a break away to spend some real family time together, these are the memories you'll never forget.

5. Watch the sea. Whether your walking the coastal paths, sitting on the seaside with some fish and chips or enjoying the beach with your family - the sea is mesmerizing in the winter.

6. Surf. Autumn and winter can be the best seasons to surf in the UK. Just make sure you have a good quality winter wetsuit.

7. Kick back in a hot tub. One of our cottages has its own private hot tub to hire and in the winter the warm is very inviting. The steam slowly rising from a good hot tub has a special attraction when its cold.

8. Sledging on Exmoor. While most of North Devon doesn't often get snow, Exmoor does and it can be a lot of fun.

9. Warm up with some fish & chips. They're an all-year-round treat in North Devon.

10. There are still plenty of attractions that are open throughout the winter period. The Big Sheep and The Milky Way are among the open adventure parks in the area. Visit our website for a list of local attractions.

So we've still got plenty to keep everyone happy - just don’t forget your hat and gloves!

See for more.

We're blogging again!

Unfortunately this year we have been slightly behind with our blog, our last post was almost exactly a year ago to be precise. But that is all changing, now we will be bringing you consistent reports of how things are going at Hele Valley Holiday Park and what we are all up to.

What a fantastic year it has been so far. Despite the often rather wet weather, it's amazing to see thousands of new happy faces (along with many familiar, just as happy faces) holidaying at Hele Valley in the stunning North Devon.

Here’s a quick insight into what we have been up to recently.

Devon’s Holiday Park and Holiday Village Award Winner

We were pleasantly surprised to be contacted by the Devon Tourism Awards in October announcing we were short-listed for another award, this time in the Holiday Park and Holiday Villages category for larger Holiday Parks.

The 6th annual Devon Tourism Awards took place on Thursday 26th November, at Plymouth’s Holiday Inn on the Hoe. The glittering award ceremony was hosted by Judi Spiers with guest speaker Peter Gorton.

The awards celebrated the breadth of Devon's tourism offer as a county, and showed the strength of the award’s finalists and winners.

We fought tough competition from a record number of 174 award entries to amazingly win a bronze in the prestigious award.

We are now officially the bronze medalist Holiday Park and Holiday Village of the year in the County.

The Doveys with our newly won award

The Chairman of the Awards Panel, David Fursdon, says:
“The Devon Tourism Awards have shown once again that this County has a wonderful group of hardworking and imaginative entrepreneurs whose tourism businesses are a credit to them; a source of pride to those of us who live here and act as a powerful magnet to those who visit.”

Visit Devon Chairman, Victoria Hatfield, comments:
“It is an inspiration to see the year-on-year investment in quality that keeps Devon at the forefront of tourism. This year’s list of Finalists is longer than ever and I offer my congratulations to them all”

Paul Hardingham, Commercial Director of Headline Sponsors Hoseasons, says:
“Devon represents everything that is exceptional about the Great British break - that’s why we are delighted to be supporting these awards once again. We help bring thousands of people to the area every year, but it’s the passion and dedication of the businesses we work with that keeps them coming back for more. Well done to the winners and all the best for another fantastic year in 2016!”

We have also managed to retain our David Bellamy Conservation Award with a Gold Award for another year.

End of season party

Every year we hold an end of season party for our owners, staff and of course any guests that like fancy dress, dancing and playing silly games until late night. Oh, and who could forget, winning a whole lot of prizes!

The annual party is held in a marquee on our top camping field. Special thanks to Ali and Mr C who are experts at putting it up and decorating it for the occasion. Samantha and Monique did a great job organising a schedule for the night. The food was delicious and the firework show was amazing.

As usual our end of season party went off with a bang. This year's party was themed Scary Christmas and held on Friday the 30th October. Santa Claus even paid us a visit and used one of our camping pods for his Grotto! We all had a fabulous time. Every year they just seem to get better and better, it is so lovely for us to see so many of our owners and guests enjoying themselves.

We're looking forward to next year's already!

We were delighted to announce the safe arrival of baby Edward on 19th October. Congratulations to Steve Dovey and his partner Jo - who certainly make awesome parents.

Merry Christmas To You All!

Well, well, well, where has the last couple of months gone?  There has been so much happening here at Hele Valley, its hard to know where to begin!

Our End of Season Halloween Party was an absolute scream. Everybody had such a fantastic time.  This year we had a couple of surprise acts, one being the Hele Valley Dance Troop performing to Michael Jackson's, Thriller, the applause after was amazing and made all the rehearsing very worth while.  Our other act was Simon the Magician, who went around the tables successfully hypnotising the guests, everybody was amazed.  It is going to be a difficult job to top that next year, but we all have our thinking caps on already! Hats off to Steve, Neil and Izzy as the Fireworks were spectacular, everybody said they were the best ones we had ever done.

We held various competitions over Halloween week, The Campbells from B5 were very keen to participate and csooped up a lot of prizes, including 1st and 2nd prize for the Pumpkin Carving, even Mrs Campbell had a go and she won best adult pumpkin, well done guys!

I'm sure most of you will know about our recent successes with our awards, as we have not stopped harping on about it, but we are all so proud, so you will have to forgive us for that.  We were notified that we had retained our David Bellamy Gold status this year, but we are one of 15 Parks in the UK to achieve it with Distinction.
Then we were delighted to be told we had won an award at the Devon Tourism Awards, so Dave and Sandra took us all to Higherbullen Hotel for the Awards Ceremony, we all had a wonderful time, and some of us may have got a little tipsy, but who could blame us, we were celebrating, as we went expecting to maybe get the Bronze Award and we received Gold, everybody was gobsmacked, it was such a lovely night that we won't be forgetting in a hurry, so we are now officially the Best Camping & Caravanning Park in Devon!

Happy Christmas to you all!!

The festive season is upon us now and we are all getting in the mood at Hele Valley Holiday Park.  Even Anna posed for us after we had decorated the Christmas Tree in reception.  I'm sure you will agree with us that the tree and Anna look great.  Ali and Karen have been decorating all the accommodations and we look forward to seeing our owners decorating skills when they arrive for their Christmas breaks with us.

We are lucky enough to be going to Woolacombe Bay Hotel for our Staff Christmas dinner, so we are all looking forward to getting our glad rags on and having a good old boogie!  Most off us are having two weeks off at Christmas, so we will all be nice and refreshed and raring to go when we return in the New Year. Thankfully the family all take care of the Park during Christmas so all the staff can enjoy the holidays.  Thank you to the Dovey's!!

 New Arrival

We were delighted in the summer to see the return of the Mitchells, when they visited us in 2013 the got engaged at Hele Valley and when we greeted them this summer it was very obvious to see that a new little Mitchell was on the way, in November we received this lovely picture of baby Savannah in the outfit that we got for her, congratulations guys, we look forward to seeing you both and Savannah in 2015.

Wildlife Watch

Our pet Robin is getting braver than ever, he visits us three times a day looking for his dinner, he now takes food from our hands and yesterday even sat on Ali's boot for a minute or so eating his lunch, he is going to miss us during the holidays.

On a closing note, we wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, we look forward to seeing owners, returning guests and new faces in 2015.

Busy Times at Hele Valley Holiday Park

The sun is shining on us here today at Hele Valley Holiday Park, everyone is busy this week in preparation for our end of season Halloween party on Friday.  Sandra and Ali have been out on the Park gardening, making the Park look it's very best for all our Party guests, Steve and Mr.C have been busy putting up the Marquee, Karen has been rushing about making sure all the accommodation is spit spot and Sam has been inventing up lots of activities for our very special little guests.

We were delighted this week to have a very special little lady called Molly back to stay with us for half term, when her parents asked her where she would like to go for her half term holiday she said Hele Valley Holiday Park straight away, and bearing in mind Molly has been lots and lots of different places all over the world, we were of course very flattered, thank you Molly!

This was just a short note this week to let you all know what we are up to, next week we will have lots of great pictures, videos and news from our end of season party.

Happy Holidays!!
